Peter Leue's page

Peter Leue (b. 1946), studied with Wendell Castle and Bill Keyser at the School for American Craftsmen located at the Rochester Institute of Technology. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1968, he taught woodworking to adolescent boys at Berkshire Farm for boys and with The N.Y.S. division for youth in Rensselaerville, N.Y. At the same time he continued to create many one of a kind pieces of furniture from commissions. He also created many pieces of sculptural furniture for shows and galleries. Upon quitting teaching in 1980, he struck out on his own and now maintains a 7000 sq. ft. woodworking shop in downtown Albany, N.Y. that he shares with 6 other craftsmen with specialties from cabinet making to Luthiery. Peter also continues to teach furniture making classes at his shop to a limited number of adult students, with courses sponsored by the Northeast Woodworkers Assn. These classes are offered in the fall and spring. Inquiries should be directed to 518-371-9145 or on the web at www.woodworker.org Although most of Peter's work lately has been fine reproduction furniture for Sotheby's Restoration in Claverack, N.Y., he prefers doing both sculptural furniture and other interactive works of art, which are soon to be made available at the Hole in the Wall Gallery within his shop at 34 Learned Street, Albany, N.Y. (518-427-8037).

Please join Peter by introducing yourself to the Gallery as you click on a tour through the entrance and down the path. To give you a preview of what you will see on this visual tour, I quote from the website:

Take a step off the beaten path and away from the ordinary by entering the meditation garden at the entrance to the Hole in the Wall Gallery. You will immediately relax as you stroll past the pond into the gallery entrance. Inside you will find an intimate space, totally out of context with the surrounding industrial neighborhood. This small gallery of sculpture and other works of art will be opening on July 14, 2000, and will feature as its premier show the works of John Dyer. The show will feature some of his new works, which will be sure to draw interest through Labor Day Weekend. Dyer's paintings are deeply moving, both in technique and in theme! Dyer's technique, which is reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth, is enhanced by his choice of themes, several of which focus on issues of life and death - and other equally powerful subjects.

The gallery will be presenting works from many sources including the sculptural work of the gallery's owner, Peter Leue. Peter has had a lifelong goal of showcasing his pieces, which many have enjoyed over the past 30 years. Shows of other artists will be held for a period of two months each, with space for outdoor art as well. The opening reception for John Dyer and the grand opening of the Gallery will be presented on July 12 at 5:30. The regular hours of operation are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from. Other hours are available by appointment at 518-427-8073 or 465-6620.

Plan on being there to be part of this unique experience in Albany. We're just "off Broadway"

You really have to see Peter's website, created by his co-worker Ian Kimball, and take the graphic tour of the gallery, starting with a leisurely stroll through the mediation garden! See the Japanese spirit gate, listen to the gentle sound of the waterfall trickling into the little fishpond, sit for a while on one of the bamboo benches, then on to the entranceway - all pictured for you on the website tour! And don't forget to look back occasionally as you stroll, so as not to miss the old Peter Comtompassis BANANAS sign, an Albany landmark - or a glimpse back at the gateway!

And don't forget to visit the actual gallery, just off Broadway on historic Learned Street.
But in case you can't, here's a quickie preview of some of Peter's own masks and other sculptures.
